drew her into the center
of their flower as she slept

she floated by her days
as if buoyed on the backs
of a small herd of wild horses

needled by some unknown force
outside her dreaming
beyond the touch of family

and when she drifted too far afield
from giving hands and blood
she sank deeper until nothing was left

but poppies, poppies
